REPRODUCTIVE OPINION OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV) TOWARD GETTING PREGNANT IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The study sought information on the reproductive opinion of people living with Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (PLWHIV) toward getting pregnant in Edo State, Nigeria. A crosssectional study design was used in this study. Purposive sampling method was used to sample
HIV positive patients using the study centres. The instrument for data collection for this study
was a self-structured questionnaire and the reliability of the instrument was computed (0.84)
using Cronbach alpha coefficient. The total population for this study was 734 and the sample
size was determined by YaroYamene sample size calculation. A total of 285 participants were
recruited for the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0
Result: Study revealed that 201 respondents representing (72.56%) said they have intention to
get pregnant, 61 respondents representing (22.02%) said that they do not know if they had
intention of getting pregnant while 15 respondents representing (5.42%) stated that they do not
have intention of getting pregnant. Majority of the respondent utilize contraceptives and there
is a significant association between education and intention to get pregnant among PLWHIV.
